India is all set to have its first Polar Polar Research Vessel (PRV), which will be sustaining its bases in Antarctica, the country's Earth Sciences Minister Kiren Rijiju said, Indian media reported on Saturday.The PRV is expected to be ready in five years, said Rijuju.The PRV proposal was initially approved by Cabinet in 2014, and a 10.51 million INR budget was authorized to acquire the vessels.However, the project got shelved after some differences between the Indian government and the company that was supposed to manufacture the vessels.The minister said that now vessels are estimated to be about 26 million INR, and the government is in talks with other countries with expertise in making such ships.The minister also hinted that New Delhi may manufacture the ship within the country.Currently, there are 70 research stations scattered across Antarctica, which are run by 32 countries. The polar region has no indigenous human inhabitants; however, research in this region is collectively done by countries mostly bound by the treaty.Due to its unique geographical location, these stations have been a huge success for research, especially in astrophysics, astronomy, climate issues, and environmental concern-related studies.A PRV will reduce India’s dependency on foreign charter vessels for logistic supplies and scientific needs and would enhance the Indian Navy’s operational reach in polar waters.

Currently, India has three bases in Antarctica and the Arctic, the Polar Research Vessel (PRV) or ice breaker ship will serve as a platform for Indian scientists to conduct oceanic studies, including the Southern Ocean.

The PRV is expected to be ready in five years, said Rijuju.
The proposal regarding the PRV is expected to come up before the parliament in the current fiscal year, the minister informed the Upper House of Parliament while replying to a query.
The PRV proposal was initially approved by Cabinet in 2014, and a 10.51 million INR budget was authorized to acquire the vessels.
However, the
project got shelved after some differences between the Indian government and the company that was supposed to manufacture the vessels.
The minister said that now vessels are estimated to be about 26 million INR, and the government is in talks with other countries with expertise in making such ships.
The minister also hinted that
New Delhi may manufacture the ship within the country.
"I am hopeful that in the next five years, we should be able to build the ship, hopefully in India," he said.
