Incessant rains triggering landslides and cloudbursts have wreaked havoc in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
The death toll in the states of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand rose to 66 on Wednesday following consistent rains that have caused landslides and cloudbursts in the hilly regions since last week.
The Indian Army and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are continuing to rescue people and pull out bodies from the debris after several houses collapsed.
Himachal Pradesh state chief Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu took stock of the situation and told Indian media on Wednesday that 60 people had died since the heavy rains began on 13 August.
He mentioned that more than 1,100 individuals were forced to leave their villages in flood-prone regions of the Kangra district due to a significant increase in the water level of the Pong Dam.
In Uttarakhand, at least six people have been killed, with many still missing, due to rain-related incidents since Monday.
On Tuesday, three people were rescued and several others feared to be trapped under the debris after a building collapsed at Helang near subsidence-hit Joshimath in the Chamoli district, officials said.
Meanwhile, people in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand have been warned not to venture out into areas affected by floods and landslides.
An alert has been sounded for heavy rainfall in Himachal Pradesh within the next two days, and in Uttarakhand during the next four days.
