India's Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has deputised 53 officers, including 29 women, from its units across the country to investigate cases related to Manipur violence. The officers will probe 17 cases related to violence in the northeastern state, including three cases of alleged gang rapes, one case in which a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) assistant commandant is accused of publicly kicking a woman in her genitalia, four cases of mob violence and other incidents.Of the three alleged gang rape cases, the accused are yet to be identified, while in the third case seven persons, including a juvenile, have been arrested. They will report to Joint Director Ghanshyam Upadhyay who will supervise the overall probe. The CBI officials said that this is the first of its kind mobilisation where such a large number of women officers have been simultaneously pressed into service, and the agency will also try to minimise the role of local officers to avoid any allegations of bias in the investigation. The federal agency has already registered eight cases, which include the monstrous incident of two women being paraded naked and sexually assaulted by a mob on May 4.Communal Violence in ManipurWidespread violence in Manipur has been raging since May 3 after the Kuki tribe organised a tribal solidarity march against the Meitei tribe's demand of Scheduled Tribe (ST) status. Manipur Strife: India Sends 53 Investigators to Probe Violence
India’s northeastern state of Manipur has been rocked by violence since May 3 after two groups clashed over a tribal solidarity march organised against the Meitei tribe’s demand for Scheduled Tribe status.
India's Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has deputised 53 officers, including 29 women, from its units across the country to investigate cases related to Manipur violence.
The officers will probe
17 cases related to
violence in the northeastern state, including three cases of alleged gang rapes, one case in which a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) assistant commandant is accused of publicly kicking a woman in her genitalia, four cases of mob violence and other incidents.
Of the three alleged gang rape cases, the accused are yet to be identified, while in the third case seven persons, including a juvenile, have been arrested.
In an order issued on Wednesday late night, the CBI said that the team includes three Deputy Inspector General (DIGs) - Lovely Katiyar, Nirmala Devi and Mohit Gupta - and Superintendent of Police Rajveer.
They will report to Joint Director Ghanshyam Upadhyay who will
supervise the overall probe.
The CBI officials said that this is the first of its kind mobilisation where such a large number of women officers have been simultaneously pressed into service, and the agency will also try to minimise the role of local officers to avoid any allegations of bias in the investigation.
The federal agency has already registered eight cases, which include the monstrous incident of two women being paraded naked and sexually assaulted by a mob on May 4.

The footage was said to be from May 4, a day after which violence erupted in the state.
More than 150 people have died in the clashes, with thousands having been injured and displaced from the region.
