Russian Navy Foils Attack by Ukrainian Uncrewed Boat in Black Sea
18:30 18.08.2023 (Updated: 18:31 18.08.2023) Russian Navy vessels were carrying out tasks to control navigation in the south-western part of Black Sea at the time of the Ukrainian attack.
The Russian Navy successfully foiled an attack by a Ukrainian uncrewed boat against Russian vessels at the Black Sea, the Russian Ministry of Defense (MoD) said on Thursday.
The attack by the Ukrainian Armed Forces boat took place at 10:55 p.m. on Thursday (Eastern European Time), around 237 kms from the port of Sevastopol, it said.
Both the vessels—patrol ship "Pytlivy" and the patrol ship "Vasily Bykov" — are part of
Black Sea Fleet, one of the five commands of the Russian Navy.
“As the attack was being repelled, the enemy unmanned boat was destroyed by fire of the onboard armament of the Black Sea Fleet ships,” the Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement.
It said that the two vessels continue to fulfil their assigned missions.
The Russian defense ministry warned last month that a number of sea areas in the Black Sea had been declared as temporarily dangerous for navigation after the collapse of the Black Sea Grain Initiative, which Moscow refused to renew due to failure of western nations to fulfil their committments made last year.
The defense ministry said that all the vessels sailing in the waters of the Black Sea to Ukrainian ports would be regarded as potential carriers of military cargo.
