India’s northern states witnessed heavy rains in July, ruining farmers' crops and causing terrible financial loss. Now, the farmers union is demanding compensation from the state and the central government.
Several farmer unions in India's Punjab state held a protest demanding compensation from the state government for the crop losses suffered due to rains-triggered floods on Tuesday.
As many as 16 unions from Haryana and Punjab participated in the protest.
They also demanded compensation for Pritam Singh (70), killed on Monday during the clash between farmers and police when a tractor-trolley ran over him. Several police personnel were also injured in the incident.

Farmers headed toward Chandigarh city were taken into custody at the border. Meanwhile, police complaints have been registered against 53 farmers in connection with the violence and on charges of attempted murder.

Police also detained farmers in Ambala and Kurukshetra city in Haryana as they planned a demonstration on Tuesday.

Farmer's unions are demanding a package of INR 500 billion ($6 billion) from the centre for damages caused by floods in the northern region, including Punjab.

They are also demanding INR 50,000 ($602) per acre compensation for crop loss, half a million rupees ($6,000) for a damaged house, and one million rupees ($12,000) for a family of a person who died in floods.
