Over 20 countries have expressed a formal interest in joining the BRICS grouping.
India fully supports the expansion of the BRICS grouping — Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa — based on consensus, Prime Minister Narendra Modi told the Summit on Wednesday.
Addressing the plenary session of the BRICS Summit, Modi recalled that India had described BRICS as a platform for building responsive, inclusive, and collective solutions during its presidency of the grouping in 2016.

“Seven years later, we can say that BRICS will be – breaking barriers, revitalizing economies, inspiring innovation, creating opportunities, and shaping the future,” the Indian leader remarked.

Media reports have suggested that 3-5 new membership applications could be approved at the Summit, though the new memberships could take up to a year to fructify.

Modi stated that India wholeheartedly welcomed the special importance afforded by the South African presidency to countries of the Global South.

“This is not only the expectation of the present time, but also the need,” he said.

“In the last two decades, BRICS has embarked on a very long and spectacular journey. We have achieved many achievements in this journey,” the Indian PM added.

The Indian PM underlined that New Delhi has also given the top priority to the developing nations during its ongoing G-20 presidency.
He recalled that 125 countries had also participated in the Voice of the Global South Summit held under India’s G-20 presidency this year to deliberate on concerns and priorities of the developing nations.
Modi expressed confidence that the BRICS nations, which are also part of G-20, will support India’s proposal to grant G-20 membership to the African Union (AU).
“All these efforts are also given a special place in the BRICS, which will further increase the self-strength of the countries of the Global South,” he said.
Lauding the role of BRICS-backed New Development Bank (NDB), Modi said that the “contingency reserve arrangement” of the bank has created a “financial safety net” for the developing nations.

Modi Proposes Enhanced Intra-BRICS Cooperation in Space, Skill Development

During his remarks, the Indian Prime Minister also proposed five areas to strengthen cooperation among the BRICS states:
space;
education and skill development;
skill-mapping;
shared efforts to protect ‘Big Cats’;
traditional medicine.
The Prime Minister expressed optimism over the significant progress made in increasing intra-BRICS cooperation in areas of railways, MSMEs and start-ups.
He also emphasized that the five developing nations were already making a “positive difference in the lives of ordinary citizens” through their collaboration in areas such as vaccine research and development.
“With initiatives like Youth Summit, BRICS Games, Think Tanks Council, we are strengthening people-to-people ties among all countries,” Modi stated.
