In his first remarks following his victory in the javelin event of the World Athletics Championships in Budapest during the weekend, Indian superstar Neeraj Chopra underplayed the intense social media buzz over his accomplishment.
"I won't say I am the greatest of all time. I have to improve more. The greatest of all time is Jan Zelezny when it comes to the javelin," Chopra, 2020 Tokyo Olympics gold medalist, said on Monday.
"The biggest thing is I still have many more throws in me and the saying goes that 'throwers don't have a finishing line'. So I can push myself, it is motivation to see how many medals one can win. Winning medals does not mean we have done everything. There are so many athletes who have won multiple medals. So I will push myself much more and work harder," he concluded.
After Chopra claimed the gold medal with his throw of 88.17m in the final, defeating Pakistan's Arshad Nadeem, a fervent debate gripped X, previously Twitter, wherein several social media users favored the track and field star to be crowned as the greatest Indian athlete ever.
In the discussions, they pointed out that with his World Championships medal, Chopra has finally bagged the lone missing piece of
the yellow metal missing from his medals cabinet.
