The congratulatory telegram's text was published by Vasily Golubev, the region's governor, on his telegram channel on Wednesday.The Russian leader added that the Red Army's massive breakthrough of the Mius lines will forever remain in the people's memory . Putin also noted that the title "City of Military Glory" was symbolically awarded to the cities of Rostov-on-Don and Taganrog. On August 30, 1943, the Red Army broke through the German lines of defense along the Mius River and liberated Taganrog, clearing the Nazis off of the region of Rostov. During the occupation, more than 200 thousand people were killed in the region. At least 96 thousand Soviet citizens and 29 thousand prisoners of war were detained in concentration camps and subjected to forced labor.

The congratulatory telegram's text was published by Vasily Golubev, the region's governor, on his telegram channel on Wednesday.
"I congratulate you on the 80th anniversary of Rostov's liberation from Nazi invaders. For centuries, your fertile land has played an important role in the development of our country, in strengthening the Russian state. <...> We will always honor the feat and self-sacrifice of all those who brought the Great Victory to the Don land. On this solemn day, I address our veterans with the warmest words of ovation and respect. Today, the worthy citizens of the region are fulfilling their duty during the special military operation," Vladimir Putin said.
