The Nataraja statue depicts Shiva, the Hindu god of dance and dramatic arts, performing the Tandava dance form. The sculptures and idols of Nataraja are revered in various Shiva temples across Tamil Nadu.
The grand iconic Nataraja statue, an embodiment of India's rich history and culture, will be witnessed by more than 25 world leaders and scores of delegates from across the world at the Bharat Mandapam convention centre where G-20 summit meetings will be held on Saturday and Sunday at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Wednesday, applauded its sculptor sculptor Radhakrishnan Sthapaty and his team from the town of Swami Malai in Tamil Nadu for creating such a magnificent statue that, he said, stands as a testament to India's age-old artistry and traditions.
PM Modi praised the sculpture and added that the Nataraja statue will bring to life aspects of India's rich history and culture.
Made of Ashtadhatu, an alloy consisting of gold, silver, copper, lead, zinc, tin, iron, and mercury, the statue stands 27 feet tall and weighs an impressive 18 tons.
Sthapaty and his team took seven months to make this statue.
Belonging to the 34 generations of the family of sculptors, Sthapaty has been making idols since the Chola Empire period (300 CE - 1300 CE).
One of the big attractions of the G20 Summit, the Nataraja statue is a symbol of cosmic energy, creativity, and power.
The Ministry of Culture team from the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA) had undertaken this grand project to create this mesmerizing statue that is a sight to behold.
