The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) congratulated the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) for the successful launch of the H-IIA rocket carrying the Smart Lander for Investigating Moon (SLIM) and the X-Ray Imaging and Spectroscopy Mission (XRISM) telescope telescope on Thursday.After being delayed three times last month due to unfavourable weather conditions, Japan's $100-million lunar mission finally took off on Thursday from Tanegashima Space Center in southern Japan and is expected to land on the Moon in early 2022.The SLIM, also called the "Moon Sniper" in Japanese, is designed for a lightweight and compact probing system. It incorporates the essential technology for precise landing on the moon, which will be crucial for future lunar missions.The XRISM, on the other hand, is a collaboration between NASA and JAXA with cooperation from the European Space Agency (ESA) that aims to enhance scientists' capacity to investigate the plasma present in stars and galaxies.This will not only provide new opportunities for observation and exploration in the vast cosmos but also unlock a whole new realm of scientific possibilities.This launch comes two weeks after India became the first nation to land on the South Pole of the Moon with its Chandrayaan-3 mission.In the past, Japan failed twice in lunar landing attempts. In November last year, JAXA lost contact with the OMOTENASHI lander during landing, while the Hakuto-R Mission 1 lander, by Japanese startup Ispace, crashed in April as it attempted to descend to the lunar surface.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) congratulated the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) for the successful launch of the H-IIA rocket carrying the Smart Lander for Investigating Moon (SLIM) and the X-Ray Imaging and Spectroscopy Mission (XRISM) telescope telescope on Thursday.
"Congratulations JAXA on the successful launch of the SLIM lander to the moon. Best wishes for another successful lunar endeavour by the global space community," ISRO tweeted.
