US Supports Canada's Stance in Khalistan Row Against India: White House
New Delhi has said that it has conveyed its position to its western partners on the ongoing diplomatic row with Canada.
US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan has said that Washington remained supportive of Canada’s efforts in carrying out a full-fledged investigation into the
killing of pro-Khalistan activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
Addressing a briefing at the White House on Thursday, Sullivan remarked that the Biden administration shared Canada’s “deep concerns” about the allegations levelled by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau against New Delhi.
“As soon as we heard from the Canadian Prime Minister publicly about the allegations, we went out publicly ourselves and expressed our deep concern about them, our support for a law enforcement process to get to the bottom of exactly what happened and to ensure that the perpetrators are held accountable,” the American NSA remarked.
He revealed that the US was in touch with both Canadian and Indian governments on the matter.
Sullivan stated that there India won’t get any “special exemption” on the matter.
“There is not some special exemption you get for actions like this. Regardless of the country, we will stand up and defend our basic principles. And we will also consult closely with allies like Canada as they pursue their law enforcement and diplomatic process,” remarked Sullivan.
‘Credible Reasons’ to Believe India was Involved in Nijjar’s Killing: Trudeau
Meanwhile, Trudeau told a press conference at the
UN headquarters in New York that there were “credible reasons” to believe that
India was involved in the killing of Nijjar, who was shot dead by unidentified men at a Sikh temple in Surrey, British Columbia, in June.
Trudeau first made the claim against Indian government “agents” alleged involvement in Nijjar’s death on Monday, during a statement to the House of Commons in Ottawa.
“We call upon the Government of India to take seriously this matter and to work with us to shed full transparency and ensure accountability and justice in this matter,” Trudeau said on Thursday.
He said that he had raised the issue with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during their meeting on the margins of G20 Summit in New Delhi this month.
At a press conference on Thursday, India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) revealed that Modi had rejected the allegation.
Bagchi said that Canada was yet to share “specific information” in the Nijjar case with India.
“We have conveyed this to the Canadian side, made it clear to them that we are willing to look at any specific information that is provided to us,” the Indian official remarked.
The MEA has rejected Canada's allegation linking it to the killing of pro-Khalistan activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar as "absurd". As a fallout of diplomatic tensions, both the governments have
expelled a senior diplomat of the other country from their capitals.
