The United States has repeatedly termed Canada's allegation against India that it had pro-Khalistani leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Canadian citizen, killed as "very serious." Reports about US Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti discussing the matter with his in-country team and that the issue could possibly harm relations between the US and India in the near future prompted a storm in certain circles, including the media, before a denial was issued by the US.The US was quick to "dismiss" reports that Garcetti had cautioned his embassy team about relations between India and the US getting worse in light of the ongoing India-Canada diplomatic row.Speaking to Sputnik on the issue of the previously reported statements, G Parthasarathy, a former Indian diplomat, said that the ambassador must done to "caution" US officials in India."If he had said so, it was unfortunate. It's unbecoming of a serving ambassador (in that case)," G Parthasarathy, a former diplomat, told Sputnik.According to reports earlier in the day, had said said that the India-US relationship could become more fraught soon in view of the diplomatic tussle. Garcetti, the reports said had also said the US may need to reduce its contacts with Indian officials for an undefined period of time.Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had alleged a "potential" involvement of Indian agents in the killing of Nijjar in Canada in June. India almost immediately rejected the allegations terming them as "absurd" and "motivated".

The United States has repeatedly termed Canada's allegation against India that it had pro-Khalistani leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Canadian citizen, killed as "very serious."
Reports about
US Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti discussing the matter with his in-country team and that the issue could possibly harm relations between the US and India in the near future prompted a storm in certain circles, including the media, before a denial was issued by the US.
The US was quick to "dismiss" reports that Garcetti had cautioned his embassy team about relations between India and the US getting worse in light of the ongoing India-Canada diplomatic row.
"The U.S. Embassy dismisses these reports. Ambassador Garcetti is working hard every day to deepen the partnership between the people and governments of the United States and India. As his personal engagement and public schedule demonstrates, Ambassador Garcetti and the U.S. Mission to India are working every day to advance the important, strategic, and consequential partners", an official statement issued by the embassy said.
Speaking to
Sputnik on the issue of the previously reported statements, G Parthasarathy, a former Indian diplomat, said that the
ambassador must done to "caution" US officials in India.
"If he had said so, it was unfortunate. It's unbecoming of a serving ambassador (in that case)," G Parthasarathy, a former diplomat, told Sputnik.
"It could even be his assessment of the situation that may have arise due to the on-going India-Canada row," Parthasarathy, who is respected for his experience and knowledge in the field, said.
"It could be a part of the ambassador's duty (to have spoken to the US officials on the matter)," he said, adding that it's his duty to as an ambassador to see relations improve.
