Afghanistan Rocked By Second Earthquake Days After Devastation From First
13:03 11.10.2023 (Updated: 10:30 15.10.2023) Afghanistan has more than its fair share of natural disasters and this month is no exception after being shaken by an earthquake only days after suffering a quake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale. The loss of life and property from the latest tragedy has not yet been assessed.
Afghanistan, which was hit by an earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale only three days ago on Saturday 7 October, is yet again reeling from another quake which shook the country with the same intensity on Wednesday, reports said.
The latest quake struck the country at around 05.10 local time (00.40 GMT). However,
no loss of life or property has as yet been reported.
According to media reports, the earthquake's epicenter was 28km north of the city of Herat. Fortunately, the last earthquake - that killed 2,053 Afghanis and flattened a large number of buildings - has forced most people in the region to sleep in the open so casualties should be contained.
Saturday's earthquake also left 9,240 wounded. Furthermore, the
aftershocks damaged up to 1,329 houses.
Afghanistan has a history of earthquakes. Last June, more than 1,000 people were killed in Paktika, when a 5.9-magnitude quake hit the province.
