Hungary Satisfied with Energy Cooperation with Russia: Foreign Minister to Sputnik
14:00 14.10.2023 (Updated: 16:31 15.10.2023) In September 2021, Hungary and Gazprom struck a deal involving supplies of 4.5 billion cubic meters of gas annually for the next 15 years.
Hungary is satisfied with energy cooperation with Russia, especially in the field of gas supplies, and does not consider it necessary to make changes to the long-term contract, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto told Sputnik.
"We are very satisfied with our energy cooperation with Russia, especially when it comes to the issue of gas deliveries. Gazprom has been a reliable partner for us for decades, and we have no reason to complain. We have always received the contracted volumes on time. So, there is no need to modify anything on our contracts," Szijjarto said.
In August 2022, Szijjarto said that Budapest came to an agreement with Gazprom on the supply of additional 5.8 million cubic meters of gas daily starting from September 1. In March, the countries agreed to extend the
additional supply agreement.
Hungary Not to Back Talks on Ukraine in EU Until Transcarpathia Issue Resolved - Szijjarto
Hungary will not give its consent to the start of talks on Ukraine’s admission to the European Union until Kiev abolishes laws that discriminate against Transcarpathian Hungarians, Szijjarto said.
The diplomat told Sputnik that the adoption of a new law on education in Ukraine led to the fact that schools that had operated as Hungarian ones in Transcarpathia had to change their operation as Ukrainian schools teaching in Hungarian only partially.
"This is unacceptable. This is against all international norms. This is against the European norms as well. So when the decision will come whether the accession talks with Ukraine can be started or not, Hungary cannot give its consent as long as the rights of the Hungarians are not given back," Szijjarto said.
