Indian fishermen crossing into Sri Lankan territorial waters while fishing and subsequently being arrested by the Sri Lankan navy has become a routine affair.
As many as 27 Indian fishermen arrested by the Sri Lankan navy in recent days have been provided with material and legal assistance, a statement from the Indian mission in the neighbouring country said.
The ''Sri Lankan Navy seized two Indian trawlers with 15 Indian fishermen aboard while three Indian trawlers with 12 fishermen aboard were apprehended near the Delft and Kachchativu Islands,'' officials in Colombo were quoted as saying by the reports.

"Consular officials of @CGJaffna provided material & legal assistance to fifteen Indian fishermen detained today (Monday) in Jaffna district. Consular officials sought the welfare of fishermen & facilitated phone calls to their family in India," the consulate general of India in Jaffna said in a post on X on Monday.

They also provided material and legal assistance to detained fishermen in the Jaffna district and looked after their welfare. The fishermen were given the opportunity to speak to their families in India, the Indian mission said in another post.
Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin has urged the central government to take immediate steps to free the Indian fishermen and secure the release of the fishing vessels.
