The coastal city of Kozhikode in southern India has over 500 libraries, and 70 publishers. Every year it hosts the Kerala Literature Festival.
Kozhikode of India's Kerala state has become first Indian city to be named as a 'UNESCO City of Literature' this week by UNESCO's Creative Cities Network (UCCN).
Kozhikode, for many years, has hosted the Kerala literature festivals and many other literary events.
A total of 55 cities worldwide are named by UNESCO in different categories.
The Gwalior city of Madhya Pradesh has also been recognized as "City of Music".
Meanwhile, Kozhikode City Mayor Beena Philip said the "City of Literature" title is a remarkable acknowledgement.
The mayor attributed the success to the collective efforts of individuals and the sustained endeavors of the corporation over the last many years.
"The newly-designated cities will cooperate with UCCN members to strengthen their resilience in the face of evolving threats like climate change, rising inequality, as well as rapid urbanisation, with 68% of the world's population projected to live in urban areas by 2050," the statement released by UNESCO reads.
