High-Level Meeting on Measures Against Air Pollution Underway in New Delhi: Reports
Amid toxic smog covering New Delhi, India's authorities are in search of an effective solution to severe air pollution that is dangerous for humans.
The authorities of India's New Delhi held a high-level meeting on Monday to discuss the rapid deterioration of air quality in the city and agreed on measures to address the pollution, local media reported.
Air pollution in New Delhi remains high for the fifth consecutive day, with toxic smog blanketing the capital and neighboring cities. The air quality index was recorded at 488 on Monday, which is a "severe" mark dangerous for human health.
During the meeting, the city authorities decided to limit the number of cars proceeding in the Indian capital after the
Hindu lights festival of Diwali celebrated on November 12, Minister for Environment, Forest and Wildlife, Development and General Administration in Government of Delhi Gopal Rai said.
"Due to air pollution, the even-odd vehicle restriction system will be in effect for one week from November 13 to November 20," Gopal told a news conference following the discussion.
Under the
new regulations, the movement of vehicles whose registration plates end in an odd number will be allowed on odd days, while cars with the plates ending in even numbers will be able to proceed on even days, the minister explained.
The need to extend the rules beyond November 20 will be considered later, he added.
