Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) during a recent party meeting decided that its supremo and three-time Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif should reach out to all parties in a bid to have fair elections and seek a thaw in a frosty political situation in the country. The party is initiating the cross-party election dialogue and has formed a committee to open communication lines with other contenders. It is set to even hold negotiations with arch-rival Imran Khan-headed Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf party, as the country is set to witness national assembly elections on February 8.Sputnik India talked to Dr. Priyanka Singh, a geo-political expert from IDSA, India's foremost think tank for advanced research in international relations, especially defence, strategic and security issues, to explore the significance of Sharif and his party's becoming so active in Pakistan. Is Sharif Enjoying Army's Backing?"The army is actively working towards easing Nawaz Sharif's legal hurdles, especially those that prohibit his political exercises. It only remains to be seen how far such obstacles are reduced so as to facilitate Sharif’s active participation, or in fact, even contest the upcoming polls," Dr. Singh stated while opining that presently it looked almost preordained that Sharif would win the February elections.Singh, the Associate Fellow at the Manohar Parrikar Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses, believes it is with the Pakistani army's full backing that Sharif has the confidence to propose a comprehensive all-party participation in the elections, including his attempts to engage his arch rival- Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). It was, therefore, futile how many outreach committees Nawaz might constitute to engage other political actors including Khan, she stated while remarking: "All this is merely to showcase the elections as fair and legitimate (which they are most unlikely to be)." "The optics of Nawaz Sharif's return - a convicted banned leader - have exposed the political fault lines even further," Singh alleged as she pointed out that Pakistan was suffering a huge credibility crisis. "Its political and economic mayhem have been at the fore."

Army May be Using Nawaz Sharif to Prevent Imran Khan from Return as PM: Expert
Since returning to Pakistan last month after four-year self-exile, Sharif and his PML-N are set to talk to all parties. Sputnik India explores the possible objectives behind it.
It is set to even hold negotiations with arch-rival Imran Khan-headed Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf party, as the country is set to witness national assembly elections on February 8.
Sputnik India talked to Dr. Priyanka Singh, a geo-political expert from IDSA, India's foremost think tank for advanced research in international relations, especially defence, strategic and security issues, to explore the significance of Sharif and his party's becoming so active in Pakistan.
Is Sharif Enjoying Army's Backing?
"Nawaz Sharif has
returned from exile with the Army's blessing. The army wants to thwart Imran Khan at any cost. It has done everything possible to forbid Imran’s party- the PTI and its supporters," she observed while commenting upon Sharif becoming re-active in national politics.
"The army is actively working
towards easing Nawaz Sharif's legal hurdles, especially those that prohibit his political exercises. It only remains to be seen how far such obstacles are reduced so as to facilitate Sharif’s active participation, or in fact, even contest the upcoming polls," Dr. Singh stated while opining that presently it looked almost preordained that Sharif would win the February elections.
Singh, the Associate Fellow at the Manohar Parrikar Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses, believes it is with the Pakistani army's full backing that Sharif has the confidence to propose a comprehensive all-party participation in the elections, including his attempts to engage his arch rival- Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
"This is also because the PML-N supremo Sharif is convinced that the army will win him the elections. The army won it for Imran Khan in 2018 via massive rigging. Now it will do so for Sharif and his party- who were at the receiving end in 2018," the expert averred.
It was, therefore, futile how many outreach committees Nawaz might constitute to engage other political actors including Khan, she stated while remarking: "All this is merely to showcase the elections as fair and legitimate (which they are most unlikely to be)."
"The optics of Nawaz Sharif's return - a convicted banned leader - have exposed the political fault lines even further," Singh alleged as she pointed out that Pakistan was suffering a huge credibility crisis. "Its political and economic mayhem have been at the fore."
"Since the country is looking for support from the US and some Arab states, it thinks it must avoid further embarrassment in terms of another rigged election. Nawaz Sharif winning hands down without legitimate contest will only further erode perceptions on Pakistan," the expert stated when asked what such moves could mean for an economic-crisis hit Pakistan in geo-political terms.
