On 7 October, Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel from the Gaza Strip. In response, Israel mobilised troops, imposed a blockade on the region and stepped up its actions.
On Tuesday, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) was fighting "in the heart" of Gaza City in full coordination with the Israeli air force and navy.
"The IDF is in the heart of Gaza. They came from north and south and attacked in full coordination with the air force and navy," Gallant said in a televised address.
The Israeli defense minister described the Gaza Strip as "the largest terrorist base ever built by humans" and ruled out the possibility of a humanitarian pause in the region before Palestinian militant groups release more than 240 hostages still held in the exclave.
The international pressure on Israel will only grow, but the military operation will continue until the complete victory over Hamas, the minister added.
On October 7, Palestinian group Hamas launched a surprise attack against Israel from Gaza, killing and abducting people in neighboring Israeli communities. Israel retaliated with missile strikes and a complete blockade of the Gaza Strip, home to more than 2 million people. On October 27, Israel launched a large-scale ground incursion into Gaza with the declared goal of eliminating Hamas and rescuing the hostages.

Netanyahu ‘Destroyed’ by Failure to Ensure Israel's Security – Ex-Prime Minister
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been "destroyed emotionally" by his failure to ensure the country’s security and is miscalculating in his plan for Gaza, former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said on Wednesday.
"[Netanyahu] has shrunk. He’s destroyed emotionally, that’s for sure. I mean, something terrible happened to him. Bibi [Netanyahu] has been working all his life on the false pretense that he is Mr. Security. He’s Mr. Bullshit ... Every minute he is prime minister he is a danger to Israel. I seriously mean it. I am certain the Americans understand he is in bad shape," Olmert told the Politico newspaper.
