After a gruelling 17-day period, all 41 migrant workers safely rescued who had been trapped in an under-construction Sikyara tunnel in Uttarakhand's Uttarkashi district.
The workers were rescued via a pipeline, through which they were pulled out, according to reports.
According to India's National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), which shared this update with Sputnik India on Tuesday evening, two metres of digging are still required to reach the workers.
"Once a breakthrough is achieved, pulling out each of the 41 men is estimated to take 3-5 minutes per individual. As a result, the overall operation may extend up to 3–4 hours," Lieutenant General Syed Ata Hasnain (retd.), NDMA member said.
State Chief Pushkar Singh Dhami met the workers who have been rescued along with Union Minister of State General (Retd) VK Singh.
The family members of the
trapped workers were present at the site as well.
Workers are taken to the Chilyanisaur Community Health Centre (CHC), which is 30 km away from the tunnel, where a special ward with 41 beds has been set up for them.
Efforts to Rescue Trapped Workers
The workers have been trapped since 12 November in the under-construction tunnel in Silkyara-Barkot tunnel in Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand after a landslide hit the area.
The administration established contact with the trapped men, who were provided oxygen, medicines, food, and water with a four-inch compressor pipeline.
The rescue was delayed as the operation faced several setbacks due to bad weather or broken machines.
On Monday, works resumed
after three days of suspension as a large auger machine got stuck in the rubble, prompting authorities to look for alternative methods. Officials said they would carry out manual drilling by 'rat miner,' a method used to drill narrow shafts as part of a primitive method of coal extraction. "
Rat-hole mining digging is banned in India, as this method is used in very small pits, not more than 4 feet wide.
"We must complete this relief and
rescue operation with much alertness. Nature is continuously giving us challenges in this effort. But we are standing firm. We are making efforts round-the-clock. We have to pray for the safe evacuation of those workers and to do it as early as possible," Prime Minister
Narendra Modi said.
