Election results for four Indian states - Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Telangana - are expected to be announced by Sunday evening.
The counting of votes to decide the fate of 2,533 candidates began on Sunday morning. Early trends show that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is leading in two states - Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. Meanwhile, the Congress appears to be leading in Telangana and Chhattisgarh.
The Mizoram election results will be announced on Monday.
These early trends, details and final results will be available by the evening.
Currently, the BJP, led by Shivraj Singh Chouhan, has ruled Madhya Pradesh for the past 20 years, except for 2018-2020.
Early indications show that the BJP has won 124 seats in the 230-seat assembly. The Congress is trailing with 100 seats. The BJP could form a government in the state for the fifth time.
"... I am confident that with the blessings of the people and the able leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the BJP will form government again with a full majority," Chouhan wrote in a post on X (formerly known as Twitter). He's also the longest-serving chief minister in the state.
The BJP is on the verge of forming a government in the 200-member
Rajasthan assembly. The Congress currently rules the state.
Meanwhile, BJP workers began celebrating outside the party office in the state capital Jaipur as the party crossed the halfway mark. Workers were seen beating drums, chanting slogans, distributing sweets and dancing.
Early trends on Sunday showed the Congress leading the ruling Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) in Telangana.
At 11:15 am, the
party was leading in over 64 seats, followed by the BRS in 42 seats and the BJP in nine seats.
Voting in all 119 constituencies of Telangana was held in a single phase on 30 November, with a voter turnout of 70.60%.
Chhattisgarh, along with Mizoram, was the first of the five states to go to the polls this election season. Elections to 90 seats in Chhattisgarh were held in two phases - on 7 November and 17 November.
However, early indications are that the Congress is winning the state comfortably. But with a margin of less than five seats (as the winning margin is 45), the trends are changing every half hour.
Both the Congress and the BJP are claiming to
form a government in the state.
