Thirty-two-year-old Jilumol M. Thomas, who was born without hands, has become the first-ever differently-abled woman in Asia to receive a license to drive a four-wheeler.
Differently-abled Jilumol M. Thomas from India's Kerala state has achieved a big breakthrough in her life after she received her driving license in Palakkad city after a six year battle.
“It’s ok that I don’t have my hands. My legs are my strength. I race towards my dreams on my feet. Now I have a vehicle to make my journey easier,” Jilumol told an Indian news agency.

An inspiration to many, Thomas, who was born without hands, had always dreamed of driving a car using her legs.
Vi Innovations Pvt. Ltd. in Kochi used cutting-edge assistive technology to modify her 2018 Maruti Celerio car so that she can drive from her legs.
Thomas, who is a freelance designer, applied to several Regional Transport Office (RTO) which turned down her request due to her physical challenges.
She approached the Kerala High Court which allowed her to appear for a test and drive a modified car in front of the MVD (Motor Vehicles Department) officials.
However, officials once again refused to issue her licence.
Thomas then knocked doors of the state commissionerate for persons with disabilities, SH Panchapakesan, who helped her to successfully secure a driving licence.
A driving school at Vaduthala in Ernakulam district agreed to register her as a student and provided her with complete training.
After receiving her driving licence, Thomas offered a ride to state ministers, including R Bindu, Chinchu Rani, KN Balagopal and KK Saseendran.
For her, mobility was her biggest handicap, but now she feels empowered to receive the license.
