The two big cats, Lara and Akamas, arrived from Cyprus at Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park in West Bengal's Darjeeling zoo. They are the first of their kind in India for 12 years.
India has received two Siberian tigers from Cyprus at its Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park in Darjeeling, West Bengal. The move marks a significant milestone for India's conservation efforts aimed at protecting the endangered species and its habitat.
In exchange, India sent a pair of red pandas to Cyprus’s Pafos Zoo.
India has been without Siberian tiger since 2011, when the last remaining tiger died at the Nainital Zoo.
The Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park's Director Basavraj Holeyachi told Indian media that the big cats are healthy and have been kept in quarantine in separate enclosures.
After a month, these Siberian tigers will be shifted to another enclosure for public viewing, Holeyachi said.
The International Union for Conservation of Nature's 2022 estimates reveal the alarming reality that Siberian tigers are under significant threat, with only an estimated 265 to 486 of these majestic creatures left in eastern Russia. This species, once widespread, is also found in China and possibly North Korea.
The addition of these majestic creatures will attract visitors from all over to witness these rare and powerful animals in their new habitat.
