Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Droupadi Murmu, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, federal ministers, and other top Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) politicians paid tribute to former Prime Minister and BJP stalwart Atal Bihar Vajpayee on his 99th birth anniversary on Monday.
The party organised a prayer meet at Sadaiv Atal, the memorial of Vajpayee in New Delhi, and Modi, along with other senior BJP members, including federal ministers Rajnath Singh and Nirmala Sitharaman, as well as BJP chief JP Nadda, were present at the meet.
All of them also paid floral tributes to the
former prime minister.
Meanwhile, Modi said that Atal Bihar Vajpayee “remains a source of inspiration”.
“On behalf of all the family members of the country, I pay my deepest respects to respected former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee ji on his birth anniversary. He remained engaged in accelerating nation building throughout his life. His dedication and service towards mother India will remain a source of inspiration even in Amritkal", Modi posted on X (formerly Twitter).
Paying rich tributes to Vajpayee, federal Home Minister Amit Shah said that he made the world realise the power of emerging India through the nuclear tests and the Kargil War.
“I remember and salute former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on his birth anniversary. Atal ji served the country and society selflessly and gave a new direction to nationalist politics in the country through the establishment of BJP", he posted on X in Hindi.
Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh state chief Yogi Adityanath remembered the former prime minister as “Ajat Shatru” (a person who has no enemies) of politics.
He said that during his tenure, Vajpayee proved how stable governments can be beneficial and that this tradition continues to this day.
“It is also a wonderful coincidence that this year marks the centenary of Atal Bihari Vajpayee's birth. He was born on 25 December, 1924. Throughout the year, there will be various programs, and on 25 December, 2024, we will have the opportunity to witness a grand celebration”, he said.
In 2014, then newly-elected Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that the
birth anniversary of Vajpayee would be observed as “Good Governance Day”.
Vajpayee, known for his eloquent speaking abilities, played a significant role in Indian politics. He started his political journey in 1957 as a young legislator and later successfully led the BJP to its first victory in parliamentary polls in 1996.
His first term as the prime minister only lasted 13 days; however, his second term lasted 13 months, from 1998 to 1999, followed by a full term from 1999-2004.
