Transport Strike Impacts Supply of Essentials in Several Parts of India: Reports
A trucker protest against a new law - Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita, which raises the penalty for hit-and-run cases, has already resulted in a shortage of goods in various parts of the country.
The supply of essentials such as petrol, diesel, and LPG cylinders has been affected across India in view of an ongoing nationwide strike by transport associations and drivers, who are protesting against the newly enacted law - Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), reports said.
This is the second day of the demonstration, which has caused disruptions in fuel supply, resulting in long queues at petrol pumps in various cities, they added.
The BNS replaces the colonial-era Indian Penal Code, and introduces stringent penalties for hit-and-run cases, particularly against motorists who flee the accident scene without reporting the incident, the media reports said.
Meanwhile, the Maharashtra government has directed the authorities concerned, including the police, to ensure the uninterrupted supply of petrol, diesel, and LPG cylinders, the reports said.
Similar arrangements are being made in other states as the strike continues, they added.
A day ago, in Gujarat and Rajasthan, protesters parked vehicles to block highways, leading to disruptions on various major routes.
