Five Reasons For Four-Fold Rise in Uttarakhand's Tiger Population
17:22 10.01.2024 (Updated: 17:23 10.01.2024) Uttarakhand wildlife officials have reported a remarkable 314 percent increase in the Indian state's tiger population between 2006 and 2022.
Uttarakhand boasts one of the highest densities of tigers in the world, with a recorded population of 560 of the big cats in 2022.
Here are the top five measures implemented by the forest department of Uttarakhand that have resulted in an
increase in the tiger population.1.
13 Tiger Reserves: The Uttarakhand forest department has established 13
tiger reserves, interconnected with corridors, over 23 percent of the state's land area, offering a suitable habitat for majestic tigers and their prey.
2.
Anti-poaching laws: To combat poaching and illegal activities, the state has deployed specialized tiger protection forces, trained sniffer dogs, and drones. The police, the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau and the courts have enforced strict anti-poaching laws.
3.
Modern technology: The Uttarakhand forest department implemented M-STrIPES (Monitoring System for Tigers - Intensive Protection and Ecological Status) software and adopted contemporary technology such as DNA analysis, radio collars, satellite imagery and camera traps to monitor the tigers.
4.
Involvement of local communities: To support forest dwellers, who coexist peacefully with wildlife and protect the environment, the state has launched livelihood and eco-development initiatives such as organic farming, handicrafts and eco-tourism for revenue generation.
5.
Collaboration and coordination: To share best practice and learn from numerous stakeholders, the state participated in various national and international forums, such as the Global Tiger Initiative and the Global Tiger Forum.
