Currently, India's minimum daily wage is INR 176 (around $2). The basic rate is meant to be reviewed twice-yearly, but has not been revised since 2017.
The Indian government is considering increasing the minimum wage before the upcoming national election, several media outlets have reported.
The federal government could make an announcement in the interim budget, which will be announced on February 1.

Meanwhile, many state governments also set their own minimum wages at levels more or less than the rate set by the federal government. However, in most states, it is higher than the federal minimum.

Unskilled labourers from different parts of the country have long demanded a raise in minimum wages. According to the report, the labour ministry is currently conducting a survey of domestic workers and calculating the cost implications of the move.

"The survey's findings will also provide information on the various socio-economic aspects of domestic workers, including size of household, social group and economic activity," Indian media reported.

Currently, India has about 500 million workers, with the majority — around 90 percent — of them working in the unorganised sector. In 2019, a committee led by Anoop Satpathy suggested a floor wage of ₹375 per day, a proposal rejected by the government for fear of substantial financial implications for employers.
