Will Rahul Gandhi’s March Boost Congress' Prospects in Lok Sabha Polls?
In the run-up to the Indian general election, Congress' unofficial leader Rahul Gandhi has embarked on his ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra’ or India Unity and Justice March from Manipur. Sputnik India asks if it will boost the opposition's chances in the upcoming polls.
All the political parties of India have pulled up their socks as the country is set for elections for 18th Lok Sabha in just two to three months.
The incumbent
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has set out its
development agenda, with leaders of the party promoting it around the country. The party is also hoping to reap electoral benefit from the recently concluded
‘pran pratishtha’ (consecration) ceremony at
grand Ram Temple in Ayodhya.
Meanwhile, in its attempt to challenge BJP, the
Indian National Congress has formed an alliance with 26 other political parties under the
Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (I.N.D.I.A.) banner. However, the unity of the opposition is still in doubt as the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC) in West Bengal and Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Punjab are planning to contest the polls alone.
Congress party MP Rahul Gandhi is on a 66-day long
‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra’ (India Unity and Justice March), aiming to connect with people across the country and highlight the failures of the BJP-led federal government.
Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra vs Ram Temple
The Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra began just a week before the pran pratishtha ceremony at the grand Ram Temple in Ayodhya city of Uttar Pradesh.
Both – Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra as well as the Ram Temple ceremony – were major electoral moves by the big two political parties in the run-up to the polls.
Political expert Shrikant Pandey feels that Gandhi’s march will have less impact on the polls, while the BJP has been successful in putting forward its development plank through the grand ceremony in Ayodhya. “Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra is unlikely to have any impact on the upcoming General Elections. It is similar to the previous march done by Rahul Gandhi which had no impact on any of the state assembly elections rather Congress lost elections in three key states – Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh,” Pandey told Sputnik India.
“This time Gandhi has failed in connecting with the people as the yatra is in a hybrid mode where he would be travelling in a bus and covering some distance on foot. Earlier, similar political marches were taken once by Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) president Jagan Mohan Reddy who travelled across Andhra Pradesh for his electoral campaign and many others therefore were able to connect with the people but Gandhi is failing,” Pandey argued.
Pandey's argument is backed the
fervour across the country ahead of grand consecration ceremony: Hindus are flying Lord Ram flags from their vehicles, temples across the country are decorated and people have lit up earthen pots at their homes to mark the occasion.
Allies Not Part of Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra
Several members of other opposition parties also participated in Gandhi's Bharat Jodo Yatra from Kanyakumari (southern tip of the country) to Jammu and Kashmir. However this time, the yatra is lacking the presence of the members of allies despite formation of formal opposition bloc.
The political expert said that no regional political party wants to be seen under Gandhi's umbrella.
“If you see, West Bengal State Chief and TMC president Mamata Banerjee has decided to go solo in the polls whereas Punjab State Chief and AAP politician Bhagwant Mann has said that his party will win all the 13 seats in the state. This shows that opposition unity is in shambles,” Pandey opined.
He added that the other members in the I.N.D.I.A bloc do not have confidence on Gandhi as the supreme leader, as he has done nothing to prove his supremacy as a politician.
