Gandhi was shot dead by Ramachandra Vinayak Godse, popularly known as Nathuram Godse, at 5.12 pm IST on January 30, 1948, at Delhi’s Birla House. He died 15 minutes later.
Politicians from across the board have paid tribute to Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, more famously known as Mahatma Gandhi, on his death anniversary this Tuesday.
President Droupadi Murmu joined Prime Minister Narendra Modi, union federal ministers and politicians from other parties in paying their respects.
"I pay homage to Pujya Bapu on his Punya Tithi. I also pay homage to all those who have been martyred for our nation. Their sacrifices inspire us to serve the people and fulfil their vision for our nation,” Modi wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
Murmu and Modi also paid floral tributes to the Father of The Nation at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial in Rajghat, Delhi.
Gandhi is famous for his non-violent actions against British colonial rule and for inspiring thousands of young people to join India’s freedom efforts.
His killer, Godse, was an ardent follower of Gandhi in the 1930s but later accused Gandhi of partitioning and betraying Hindus by being too pro-Muslim and soft on Pakistan.
For their part, Congress party President Mallikarjun Kharge, parliamentarian Rahul Gandhi and other prominent politicians also paid tribute to Gandhi.
“The enemy is fear. We think it’s hate but it is fear. On Martyrs Day, we pay our respects to Bapu, the moral compass of our nation. We must pledge to fight against those who seek to destroy his ideals based on ‘sambhav’ and ‘sarvodaya’,” Kharge tweeted.
Rahul Gandhi, who is currently leading the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, participated in a prayer meeting held in Araria in Bihar.
January 30 is also Martyrs' Day (or Shaheed Diwas) in India to pay homage to the courageous soldiers who sacrificed their lives for their motherland.
