Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of Bangladesh emphasized the importance of enhancing trade between Bangladesh and India through their respective currencies, the Bangladeshi Taka and the Indian Rupee.
This proposal was made during a meeting with Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, which took place at Hotel Bayerischer Hof in Munich, Germany. The meeting occurred on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference (MSC) 2024, where foreign minister Dr. Hasan Mahmud later briefed reporters on the outcome.
According to Dr. Hasan Mahmud, both Prime Minister Hasina and Minister Jaishankar underscored the significance of conducting bilateral trade using their own currencies to decrease reliance on external currencies like the US dollar.
"Relations between the countries are getting stronger day by day," stated Dr. Hasan, reflecting the positive sentiment expressed during the meeting. He quoted Minister Jaishankar affirming that the ties between the two nations would continue to strengthen in the future.
The briefing was attended by Bangladesh Ambassador to Germany Md Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan and PM's Deputy Press Secretary Md Noorelahi Mina.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina arrived in Munich on February 15 for a three-day official visit to participate in the Munich Security Conference 2024. Following the conclusion of her visit, she is expected to depart Munich on February 19, returning to Dhaka.
