Indian student Jaahnavi Kandula was struck down and killed by an overspeeding police car last year in January while crossing a street in Seattle. Kandula was thrown 100 feet by the speeding Seattle police patrol vehicle.
Parents and friends of Jaahnavi Kandula expressed outrage and said that the US prosecutor's office failed to deliver justice to the deceased, Indian media reported on Thursday.
On Wednesday, The King County Prosecutor's Office decided that they won't lead any "criminal charges" against Seattle police officer Kevin Dave, who mowed down a 26-year-old Indian student.
Dave was driving at the speed of 74 mph (more than 119 kmph) on the way to a report of a drug overdose call, when he struck down Kandula.
Footage released by the Seattle Police Department shows that another officer, Daniel Auderer, recorded on his body-worn video, laughed about the deadly crash, saying, "Just write a cheque. USD 11,000. She was 26 anyway, she had limited value."
Officer Auderer's comments were also unprofessional and undermined the public's trust in the Seattle Police Department and law enforcement in general," said King County Prosecuting Attorney Leesa Manion.
The prosecution office said Auderer's comments were "appalling and deeply troubling."
Kandula's death drew attention to the issue of pedestrian safety in Seattle, where more than 20 people were killed by vehicles in 2023, according to the Seattle Department of Transportation. Her death raised questions about the use of force and accountability of the Seattle police officers.
