Navy Chief Declares BrahMos Missile as Primary Weapon of Indian Navy
The Indian government has approved a contract worth INR 190 billion ($2.29 Billion) for the acquisition of over 200 BrahMos Extended Range (ER) supersonic cruise missiles for deployment on Indian Navy warships.
The Indian Navy Chief Admiral R. Hari Kumar has announced that the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile will become the primary weapon of the Indian Navy, replacing older missile systems procured from other countries.
During the closing ceremony of the
Defense Expo in Pune, Admiral Kumar told the Indian news agency that
the Indian Air Force and its fighter aircraft could also potentially integrate BrahMos as their
primary air-to-surface weapon.
Hailing BrahMos for its remarkable advancement in range, capabilities, and lethality, Admiral Kumar said that it is "a very potent missile" and its indigenous production in India not only grants self-reliance but also ensures easy access to repair and spare parts.
He stressed the importance of
Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in India's journey toward achieving self-reliance in defense manufacturing.
The Navy chief's remarks come after the Cabinet Committee on Security approved a contract worth INR 190 billion ($2.29 billion) for more than 200 BrahMos missiles. The deal is anticipated to be officially signed on March 5.
