In a bid to make India one of the top five chip ecosystems by 2029, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday laid the foundation of three chip plants by Tata Electronics and CG Power, entailing a total investment of INR 1.26 trillion ($15.3 billion).
The first Indian-made chips will be launched in December 2026 by the Tata Electronics plant in Dholera, Gujarat, Union Minister for Communications and IT Ashwini Vaishnaw said.
Tata Electronics has partnered with the Taiwan-based Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp (PSMC) to establish India's first semiconductor fabrication unit, investing INR 910 billion ($11 billion) in India's semicon city Dholera.
The factory will produce chips in the 28 nm, 50 nm, and 55 nm nodes, focusing on crucial technologies such as wire bonding, flip chip technology, and integrated systems packaging (ISP).
It will cater to a wide range of sectors, including automotive, computing and data storage, wireless communication, medical devices, and artificial intelligence.
With a manufacturing capacity of up to 50,000 wafers per month, the fab positions India as a crucial supply chain partner in the global semiconductor industry.
Gujarat state chief Bhupendra Patel told Indian media that his is the first state to develop a dedicated semiconductor policy as the government progresses towards establishing Gujarat as the hub of semiconductor manufacturing in India.
