Tensions between India and the Maldives flared up last year after several Maldivian government ministers publicly criticized Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and were subsequently suspended.
One of the suspended Maldivian ministers, Mariyam Shiuna, of President Mohamed Muizzu's ruling People's National Congress (PNC), took to social media on Monday to apologise for disrespecting Indian Tricolour in her recent post on X.
She clarified that this was entirely unintentional and Maldives deeply values its relationship with India and holds mutual respect.

In the now deleted post by Shiuna, the logo of the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) on the campaign poster was replaced with a picture resembling the Ashok Chakra on India's flag along with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) symbol added towards the end.

"MDP is heading towards a big slip. The people of Maldives don't want to fall and slip with them," she posted along with the picture.
Calling it "disrespectful" and "insulting", several netizens condemned Shiuna's post made at a time when India approved export of essential goods including rice, wheat, sugar, onion and others to Maldives on the request of Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu.
