The Sri Lankan Cabinet has approved the renovation of the Kankesanthurai Port in the Northern Province, with India offering to cover the entire project cost, according to a press statement on Tuesday reports PTI.Situated in Sri Lanka's northern region, the Kankesanthurai Port, also known as the KKS Port, spans approximately 16 acres and is located around 104 kilometers (56 nautical miles) from the Karaikal Port in Pondicherry.Additionally, a direct passenger ship service operates between Nagapattinam in Tamil Nadu and the Kankesanthurai Port near Jaffna, covering a distance of approximately 111 kilometers (60 nautical miles) in roughly three and a half hours.The statement noted that project implementation had faced delays due to discrepancies between the estimated Economic Value of Equity (EVE) cost provided by consulting service agencies and the amount allocated through the loan.During a meeting held in March this year between the Sri Lankan Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Aviation, Nimal Siripala de Silva, and the Indian High Commissioner at the Ministry office, the Indian Government committed to providing a grant of USD 61.5 million for the full development of the Port of Kankesanthurai (KKS).In the course of the conversation, the Indian High Commissioner reaffirmed India's dedication to bolstering regional collaboration between the two countries and assured full support in attracting a greater number of Indian tourists to Sri Lanka.The initial cabinet approval for the project was granted on May 2, 2017.Subsequently, approval for providing Project Management Consultant Services was issued on December 18, 2019.

Additional conversations have taken place with both the Government of India and Sri Lanka concerning the potential completion of the project through the Public-Private Partnership approach.
The Sri Lankan Cabinet has approved the renovation of the Kankesanthurai Port in the Northern Province, with India offering to cover the entire project cost, according to a press statement on Tuesday reports PTI.
Situated in Sri Lanka's northern region, the Kankesanthurai Port, also known as the KKS Port, spans approximately 16 acres and is located around 104 kilometers (56 nautical miles) from the Karaikal Port in Pondicherry.
Additionally, a direct passenger ship service operates between Nagapattinam in Tamil Nadu and the Kankesanthurai Port near Jaffna, covering a distance of approximately 111 kilometers (60 nautical miles) in roughly three and a half hours.
''Considering the importance of the project, the Indian government has agreed to grant the entire estimated cost of the project," the statement added.
The statement noted that
project implementation had faced delays due to discrepancies between the estimated
Economic Value of Equity (EVE) cost provided by consulting service agencies and the amount allocated through the loan.
"Therefore, further discussions have been held with the Government of India regarding the possibility of completing the project under the Public Private Partnership Method,'' the statement noted.
During a meeting held in March this year between the Sri Lankan Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Aviation, Nimal Siripala de Silva, and the
Indian High Commissioner at the Ministry office, the Indian Government committed to providing a grant of USD 61.5 million for the full development of the
