Cooperation between Russia and India on building ships for the Northern Sea Route (NSR) will be a centerpiece of the Eastern Economic Forum (EF) in September.
Russia's plans to cooperate with India in building ships for the Northern Sea Route (NSR) will be actualized at the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF) in September, Far East and Arctic Development Minister Alexei Chekunkov told Sputnik.
Russia is cooperating with India in many areas, including by working on attracting construction contractors, according to Chekunov.

"The Northern Sea Route (NSR) development plan is the construction of ports, terminals and access routes. In terms of vessel construction, both Chinese and Indian companies are expressing interest. But India has no experience in building ice-class vessels. The issues are still being worked out," Chekunov highlighted.

In September 2023, India’s minister of ports, shipping and waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, said that his country was interested in cooperating with Russia on the development of the Northern Sea Route. During the last EEF, Chekunkov noted that New Delhi had proposed to Moscow the joint development of non-nuclear icebreakers at Indian shipyards.

"India continues to express great interest in working on the NSR. The [Indian] elections have just taken place, a new government of India is being formed, and we expect that by the EEF or during the EEF my Indian counterpart and I will actualize these plans," Chekunkov underscored.

The Russian city of St. Petersburg is hosting the 27th edition of SPIEF from June 5-8. Last year, the forum drew 17,000 participants from 130 countries and saw the signing of more than 900 agreements.
