India and Bangladesh share strong historical ties, with the former playing a key role in the latter's Liberation War from Pakistan in 1971.
53 years after its liberation from Pakistan, aircraft belonging to the Bangladesh Air Force (BAF) will operate in Indian skies, marking the first time they will do so since the country's creation in 1971.
The much-talked-about debut of the BAF inside India's airspace will come during the multi-nation drill, Tarang Shakti (Power of Waves), which will take place in two stages later this month.
While the first phase of the exercise will take place at the Indian Air Force's (IAF) air base in Sulur, Tamil Nadu, from August 6 to 14, the second phase of the military drills will be held from August 29 to September 14 in Jodhpur in the north-western state of Rajasthan that borders Pakistan.
"This is the largest international air exercise being conducted in India and invitations were extended to 51 countries, and we have confirmation from 10 countries for participation with their assets and 18 countries as observers," Air Marshal AP Singh, the vice-chief of the IAF, said in a press conference in New Delhi.
The BAF warplanes will join the aircraft of the IAF and other participant nations in the second phase of the wargames at the Jodhpur air base in Rajasthan.
The IAF's Jodhpur base is home to the homegrown Light Combat Helicopter (LCH) Prachand's squadron. Notably, Prachand is the only attack helicopter in the world that can operate at an elevation of more than 5,000 meters above sea level.
Besides engaging in wargames in the sky, the exercise will include ground training and cultural exchanges between air warriors of different nationalities.
Also, personnel from the nations participating in the exercise will take part in defence exhibitions and visit firms associated with India's military sector.
