BRICS Solidarity: Brazilian, Indian Navy Chiefs Discuss Closer Security Ties
18:14 21.08.2024 (Updated: 19:30 21.08.2024) The Brazilian Navy Chief's visit to India from 19 to 24 August highlights the commitment of like-minded navy forces to collaborate and cooperate on shared challenges in maritime security, the Indian Defence Ministry stated.
Brazilian Navy Chief Admiral Marcos Sampaio Olsen held talks with Indian Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh Tripathi to bolster maritime cooperation between the two BRICS partners in New Delhi on Wednesday, according to a readout by the Indian Defence Ministry (MoD).
The Navy Chiefs discussed “operational engagements, technical cooperation, and training”, the statement reads.
Earlier in the day, Brazilian Navy Chief Admiral Marcos Sampaio Olsen received a ceremonial guard of honour at the South Block Lawns.
He would also be visiting the Indian Navy’s Information Fusion Centre – Indian Ocean Region (IFC-IOR) in Gurugram and interact with representatives of the Indian defence industry, according to MoD.
Meanwhile, Olsen called on Lieutenant General NS Raja Subramani, the Vice Chief of the Army Staff (VCOAS) to discuss issues of “mutual interest”, including bilateral defence cooperation, a statement by the Indian Army noted.
Likewise, the Brazilian Navy Chief is scheduled to meet India’s Defence Secretary and the National Maritime Security Coordinator during the ongoing visit.
From New Delhi, he would be travelling to Mumbai to hold talks with Vice-Admiral Sanjay J Singh, the chief of India’s Western Naval Command.
Further, the Brazilian delegate would be visiting India’s indigenous warships and submarines, as well as a naval dockyard and the state-backed Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited.
Meanwhile, the MoD readout noted that India and Brazil Navy forces cooperate in a range of ways, which include operational interactions, training collaboration and other maritime avenues.
“Indian Navy cooperates with the Brazilian Navy through various initiatives, which include operational interactions, training cooperation and other maritime avenues. The two navies have also been interacting in multilateral forums like MILAN [maritime excercise hosted by India] and India-Brazil-South Africa Maritime(IBSAMAR). Bilateral Defence Cooperation between the two countries is conducted through the Joint Defence Committee, steered by respective Ministries of Defence,” the Indian readout stated.
Olsen’s visit coincides with that of Russian Navy Chief Admiral Aleksandr Moiseev, who began his
four-day official visit to India on Monday.
