A violent clash broke out on Sunday during the Indian High Commission’s routine consular camp organised at the Hindu Sabha Temple in Brampton.
During a routine consular camp hosted at the Hindu Sabha Mandir in Brampton town, pro-Khalistan protesters gathered outside the venue in the morning to oppose the presence of Indian officials attending the event.
In the wake of pro-Khalistan supporters staging an attack on a consular camp at a Hindu temple in Brampton, a new video has surfaced, raising concerns regarding the Canadian police's apparent support to Khalistani element.
In the clash video, Khalistani radicals can be seen attacking Indians with sticks, flagpoles bearing Khalistani flag, and traffic cones.
Upon hearing about the incident, a large number of local Indian-origin community members rushed to the temple to help evict the trespassing Khalistanis.
India’s High Commission in Ottawa issued a statement condemning the “violent disruption” which it attributed to "anti-India elements", highlighting that similar attempts to disrupt consular camp had occurred in Surrey and Vancouver.
According to the statement, the Indian side had requested Canadian authorities “well in advance” to provide strong security for the consular camps being organised by Indian missions in Ottawa, Toronto and Vancouver because of the “prevailing security situation”.
“Despite these efforts by anti-India elements, our Consulate was able to issue more than 1000 life certificates to the Indian and Canadian applicants,” the statement said.
“In light of these incidents, and with the continued threats posed to the Indian diplomats and officials, local venue organisers as well as local attendees, organisation of further scheduled consular camps will be contingent on security arrangements made for them by local authorities,” it added.
The Ontario Sikhs and Gurdwara Council (OSGC) also condemned the attack and said that violence and intimidation have no place in the community.
Amid the strained diplomatic tensions between India and Canada, the attack on the Hindu temple sparked outrage among the Indian community in Canada, who are coming out against anti-Khalistani actions and call for stronger law enforcement measures.
Many are calling for an investigation into the police's role during the incident, questioning their commitment to maintaining public order amid growing polarisation.
