NEW DELHI (Sputnik) – India's Minister of External Affairs, S Jaishankar, expressed welcome on Tuesday for Russia’s interest in exploring economic opportunities in India during the inter-governmental commission meeting.
"As two major nations in an increasingly multipolar world, a more substantive relationship between us has a larger resonance. We welcome and fully reciprocate Russia's growing interest in exploring economic opportunities in India. Our economies are not only complementary in many respects, but benefit from the trust and confidence build over many years," Jaishankar said in his opening remarks.
He described the joint commission as a "coordinating mechanism to take forward economic and trade cooperation in particular," voicing hope that the current meeting would "make a strong contribution to the direction and progress of our strategic partnership."
Russia and India are holding the 25th meeting of the Inter-governmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technical and Cultural Cooperation in New Delhi on Tuesday, co-chaired by Jaishankar and Russian First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov.
The Russian-Indian Inter-governmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technical and Cultural Cooperation is a mechanism for regular monitoring of bilateral progress in the sectors of trade and economic cooperation between the two countries, which was established by the agreement on the Inter-governmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific and Technological Cooperation signed in May 1992.
