Western missionaries' colonial campaign to convert Indians continues to this day, with vulnerable people often being 'taken for a ride,' former Indian Army Chief General Vijay Kumar Singh told Sputnik India.
Western missionaries operating in India have been exploiting Indians without resources, retired Indian Army Chief General VK Singh, former Minister of State (MoS) for External Affairs, currently the Governor of Mizoram, as he pointed to the trends in northeastern states and several other parts of the country.
"This system has been going on for a long time. There is nothing new happening. It obviously depends on factors such as who sends them, how much financial support they have and how zealous they are. It depends on the zeal to profess the religion they have been sent to profess," Singh stated in an interview with Sputnik India.
He recalled that the colonial British authorities considered tribes in the northeast as their "guardians" in the East, which is why they actively called in western preachers to convert Indians in order to serve their own geopolitical ends.
"Over the years, you could look at the number of people who came under the umbrella of Christianity and the number of churches built there. What we need to do is to understand that people have got converted. We probably have to tell them what the past was. How they are being taken for a ride, it happened in Andhra Pradesh under former Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy. In many other parts of the country, the same thing is happening," Singh stated.

Singh warned that it was generally people without resources who were "falling prey" to western missionary activities.
"There are Christian charities funding hospitals and schools offering free services. The funding for these charities might be coming from outside the country. Obviously, these are very attractive for people. That is how these things spread over a period of time. This system has to be understood," the retired General said.
The comments come against the backdrop of concerns expressed by members of the Indian strategic community on the possible role of western missionaries in exploiting ethnic faultlines in the region amid the situation in Manipur.
Further, commenting on Pakistan's ballistic missile programme and India's 'No First Use (NFU)' nuclear doctrine, the ex-Army Chief cited former Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
"I will quote one of our leaders, who was asked about our nuclear policy. He [Vajpayee] had said that our policy is very clear. We won't go for first use. But we have a nuclear triad. If something is used against us, there will be nothing left of Pakistan. So, where is the doubt? Let them worry about it," Singh emphasised.
