India's oil refining capacity is set to increase by over 50 Million Metric Tonnes Per Annum (MMTPA), the Petroleum Ministry said in a media release on Tuesday.India currently has 22 functional oil refineries with an overall capacity of 256.8 MMTPA. While eighteen of these refineries are owned by the government, three are private sector undertakings, including the world's largest, Reliance-run Jamnagar refinery in Gujarat. Additionally, the Guru Gobind Singh Refinery in Bathinda district of India's northern state of Punjab is a joint venture between the Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) and British billionaire Laxmi Mittal's Mittal Energy Investment Pte Ltd.If one breaks down India's total refining capacity, 157.3 MMTPA is under Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs), 88.2 MMTPA is privately owned and the remaining 11.3 MMTPA is part of a joint venture.

With India's oil imports increasing on a year-to-year basis, the South Asian nation is now expanding its refining capacity in a bid to procure more crude from abroad.
India's oil refining capacity is set to increase by over 50 Million Metric Tonnes Per Annum (MMTPA), the Petroleum Ministry said in a media release on Tuesday.
India currently has 22 functional oil refineries
with an overall capacity of 256.8 MMTPA.
While eighteen of these refineries are owned by the government, three are private sector undertakings, including the world's largest, Reliance-run Jamnagar refinery in Gujarat. Additionally, the Guru Gobind Singh Refinery in Bathinda district of India's northern state of Punjab is a joint venture between the Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) and British billionaire Laxmi Mittal's Mittal Energy Investment Pte Ltd.
"Further, refining capacity is likely to increase from 256.80 MMTPA to 309.50 MMTPA by 2028 on account of refinery capacity expansion projects being implemented in 11 PSU refineries as well as setting up of new grassroot refinery," the ministry's statement read.
If one breaks down India's total refining capacity, 157.3 MMTPA is under Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs), 88.2 MMTPA is privately owned and the remaining 11.3 MMTPA is part of a joint venture.
