Russia has repeatedly stated that India and Brazil deserve permanent seats in a reformed United Nations (UN) Security Council, as they meet all the relevant criteria, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said at a news conference summirising Russian diplomacy outcomes for 2024 in Moscow on Wednesday. While the US was undermining efforts to include developing nations in the UNSC, it was supporting the inclusion of its own allies, the Russiam FM pointed out.

India Deserves Permanent UNSC Seat: Russian FM Lavrov
15:09 14.01.2025 (Updated: 15:10 14.01.2025) Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has squarely criticised the West for undermining efforts to expand the UNSC membership to India, Brazil and African nations.
“A reform of the UN Security Council is necessary because not all countries that bear special responsibility are adequately represented there,” Lavrov said, noting that African countries also deserve a UNSC seat.
While the US was
undermining efforts to include developing nations in the UNSC, it was supporting the inclusion of its own allies, the Russiam FM pointed out.
“The United States is pushing to include Germany and Japan in the Security Council, countries that lack an independent voice and blindly follow the US agenda. This is unfair: the West already holds 6 out of 15 seats — enough is enough,” Lavrov stressed.
