And we will always remember that it was the Soviet soldier who crushed this terrible, total evil, and won," Putin said in a welcoming speech at the memorial ceremony dedicated to the International Holocaust Remembrance Day and the 80th anniversary of the liberation of prisoners of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp by the Red Army. Russia will do everything to defend the right of people to ethnic, linguistic, and spiritual identity and to prevent the spread of anti-Semitism, the president said.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The Red Army liberated the Auschwitz concentration camp in January 1945 and Russia will always remember that it was the Soviet soldier who crushed this evil and won the war, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Monday.
"In January 1945, the Red Army liberated the Auschwitz concentration camp, revealing to humanity the truth about the crimes of the Nazis and their henchmen, who exterminated millions of Jews, Russians, Gypsies, and representatives of other peoples.
