Politicians from India's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have lauded US President Donald Trump's crackdown on USAID, as they criticised the federal agency for its alleged role in supporting entities harbouring an "anti-India agenda" and promoting narratives inimical to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government.USAID-linked entities were likely involved in efforts to "destabilise" PM Modi's government on multiple occasions over the last decade, Dr Anirban Ganguly, the Chairman and Trustee of BJP's think tank Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee Research Foundation (SPMRF), told Sputnik India. The BJP leader said that sections of some of the previous governments in India were "overtly supportive" of USAID-linked entities.Ganguly asserted that there was definitely a section within the USAID which tried to consistently peddle an "anti-India agenda".Speaking in the context of Bangladesh, the BJP politician lambasted USAID for supporting a government which has been "completely oblivious to human rights of minorities".Another BJP leader, Savio Rodrigues, told Sputnik India that certain bosses of USAID were akin to "white-collared criminals".Further, he said that USAID had always been a "frontal organisation" for the US Deep State to advance its geopolitical interests."If USAID is a hub, then NED should be viewed as a spoke, as far as activities of Deep State are concerned," he added.Echoing Ganguly's views on USAID's role in India, Rodrigues underlined that there has certainly been a Deep State "involvement" in fuelling ethnic tensions in Manipur.Rodrigues stated that PM Modi had largely been able to counter the US Deep State agenda in India, particularly "during the anti-CAA protests, the farmer protests or the Lok Sabha elections last year."According to official data, an overwhelming majority of US government's foreign assistance is handled by USAID, which has an annual budget of around $42.8 billion. However, as India emerged as a net donor from a net recipient of foreign aid under PM Modi, there has been a growing skepticism around the conditions attached with incoming aid from agencies such as USAID.In 2023, USAID reportedly disbursed around $175.71 million of funds to India in sectors such as health, economic development, education and social services among others. Around $7.43 million of USAID funds were allotted for "democracy, human rights and governance".Just hours after assuming office on 20 January, Trump signed an Executive Order on “Re-evaluating and Realigning United States Foreign Aid”. Subsequently, Secretary of State Marco Rubio ordered a pause on US foreign aid for a 90-day reassessment period. American military assistance to Israel and Egypt have been barred from the foreign aid pause.

India Welcomes Trump's Crackdown on USAID: BJP Politicians
Elon Musk, head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), called US Agency for International Development (USAID) a "criminal organisation." Donald Trump, labeling it "run by radical lunatics", said he's considering the agency's future.
Politicians from India's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have lauded US President Donald Trump's crackdown on USAID, as they criticised the federal agency for its alleged role in supporting entities harbouring an "anti-India agenda" and promoting narratives inimical to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government.
USAID-linked entities were likely involved in efforts to "destabilise" PM Modi's government on multiple occasions over the last decade, Dr Anirban Ganguly, the Chairman and Trustee of BJP's think tank Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee Research Foundation (SPMRF), told Sputnik India.
"The USAID has been linked to peculiar organisations and individuals. I won't say that these entities have an anti-government agenda, but rather an anti-India agenda. There has been a very peculiar group of human rights activists and so-called liberals supported by the likes of USAID. In the garb of promoting peace, they have actually peddled a certain agenda which has never been in the interest of India," Ganguly stated.
The BJP leader said that sections of some of the previous governments in India were "overtly supportive" of USAID-linked entities.
"There should be an audit of USAID activities over the last decade or so. Because we have seen a number of attempts in the last decade to destabilise the Mr Modi's government by creating false narratives and exacerbating fault lines. There have also been attempts to generate fault lines where none existed, and a concerted efforts by USAID-linked entities, at least in a certain section of Indian civil society," Ganguly suggested.
Ganguly asserted that there was definitely a section within the USAID which tried to consistently peddle an "anti-India agenda".
Speaking in the context of Bangladesh, the BJP politician lambasted USAID for supporting a government which has been "completely oblivious to human rights of minorities".
"Therefore, it is important to know which are the organisations funded by USAID, what has been their overt and covert agenda, their long-term objectives and how they have managed to penetrate into countries and societies. Most importantly, it should be investigated whether USAID funds have been deployed to
trigger regime change in any country," the thinktank chief said.
Another BJP leader, Savio Rodrigues, told Sputnik India that certain bosses of USAID were akin to "white-collared criminals".
"USAID has always been a dangerous organisation for any nation in which it operates. They have tried to mold perceptions and stoked disaffection by supporting an anti-government agenda under the guise of promoting governance, human rights and democratic reforms," Rodrigues underscored.
Further, he said that USAID had always been a "frontal organisation" for the US Deep State to advance its geopolitical interests.
"What is clear to many in India that that the USAID has been working with other similar entities such as NED [National Endowment for Democracy], on the diktat of Deep State. The USAID has advanced Deep State's agenda in vulnerable countries such as Bangladesh. So, it's role in destabilising countries such as Bangladesh should be investigated," Rodrigues said.
"If USAID is a hub, then NED should be viewed as a spoke, as far as activities of Deep State are concerned," he added.
Echoing Ganguly's views on USAID's role in India, Rodrigues underlined that there has certainly been a
Deep State "involvement" in fuelling ethnic tensions in Manipur.
"The Deep State has effectively used NGOs which are linked to the USAID or NED in some form or the other. There are many layers to these links. So, I believe that USAID has always harboured an anti-Indian agenda," he emphasised.
Rodrigues stated that PM Modi had largely been able to counter the US Deep State agenda in India, particularly "during the anti-CAA protests, the farmer protests or the Lok Sabha elections last year."
According to official data, an overwhelming majority of US government's foreign assistance is handled by USAID, which has an annual budget of around $42.8 billion. However, as India emerged as a net donor from a net recipient of foreign aid under PM Modi, there has been a growing skepticism around the conditions attached with incoming aid from agencies such as USAID.
In 2023, USAID reportedly disbursed around $175.71 million of funds to India in sectors such as health, economic development, education and social services among others. Around $7.43 million of USAID funds were allotted for "democracy, human rights and governance".
Meanwhile, Bangladesh has been the biggest recipient of USAID funds in the region, with the agency doling out over $400 million in 2023. A lion's share of USAID budget in Bangladesh went for humanitarian assistance. At the same time, nearly $21 million were handed out for the work of "democracy, human rights and governance", a sum that's come under scrutiny in the wake of allegations of US Deep State-backed regime change last August.
Just hours after assuming office on 20 January, Trump signed an Executive Order on “Re-evaluating and Realigning United States Foreign Aid”. Subsequently, Secretary of State Marco Rubio ordered a pause on US foreign aid for a 90-day reassessment period. American military assistance to Israel and Egypt have been barred from the foreign aid pause.
