The Kalibr-PL missiles that India procured from Russia for its Sindhughosh-class submarines is an integrated missile system for sub-surface vessels, with its export variant called the Club-S, as per Russian military analyst Alexey Leonkov, the editor of the publication Arsenal Otechestva (Arsenal of the Fatherland). The 3M-54E1 anti-ship missile is comparable to the Kh-35U, as both are subsonic, though they differ in range, the defence pundit added.Russia also has supersonic missiles like Oniks and hypersonic missiles like Zircon. While each of these missiles has its specific role when targeting ships, the 3M-54E1 missile is primarily designed to target warships of the destroyer class and other smaller vessels, Leonkov explained. The Kalibr-PL is an export-ready, Russian Ministry of Defence-approved complex, supplied both as part of submarines for export and as a separate system for installation on other submarines, he stressed.Though it is a subsonic missile, Kalibr-PL belongs to the class of highly precise weaponry. While India has developed a submarine-launched variant of the highly acclaimed BrahMos missile, has not been able to find a solution for deploying it on submarines, the military observer emphasised. This kind of system has been installed on Russia's 636.3 Varshavyanka class submarines, which actively participated in launching strikes against land targets in Ukraine. The 3M-14 missile, in particular, was used, accurately striking ground targets at long ranges, he revealed. These are submarines of the Black Sea Fleet, which participated in operations where not only surface ships from the Black Sea Fleet were involved, but also submarines. According to the Russian MoD, all the targets were successfully hit, Leonkov concluded.

Check Out the Kalibr Missile: India’s Latest Acquisition from Russia
13:44 07.02.2025 (Updated: 20:53 07.02.2025) This week, India signed a contract with Russia for the purchase of anti-ship cruise missiles, which are widely used in Russia's Special Military Operation in Ukraine. Sources from India's Ministry of Defence confirmed to Sputnik that it was Kalibr-PL.
"This system is integrated into the submarine, enabling it to launch missiles via 533mm torpedo tubes. When it comes to the missiles it can launch, the system includes the well-known 3M-14E Kalibr missile, which has a range of over 1500 km (export version), the APR-3M torpedo missile, the MPT-1UM-E torpedo missile, and also anti-ship Kalibr missiles, specifically the 3M-54E1 with a range of about 300 km," he told Sputnik India on Thursday.
The 3M-54E1 anti-ship missile is comparable to the Kh-35U, as both are subsonic, though they differ in range, the defence pundit added.
Russia also has supersonic missiles like Oniks and hypersonic missiles like Zircon. While each of these missiles has its specific role when targeting ships, the 3M-54E1 missile is primarily designed to target
warships of the destroyer class and other smaller vessels, Leonkov explained.
The Kalibr-PL is an export-ready, Russian Ministry of Defence-approved complex, supplied both as part of submarines for export and as a separate system for installation on other submarines, he stressed.
Though it is a subsonic missile, Kalibr-PL belongs to the class of highly precise weaponry.
While India has developed a submarine-launched variant of the highly acclaimed BrahMos missile, has not been able to find a solution for deploying it on submarines, the military observer emphasised.
"That's why it chose the Russian Kalibr-PL or the export version, Club-S. This system is versatile, enabling deployment on submarines with torpedo tubes to launch anti-submarine missiles, missiles capable of striking ground targets at a distance of 1500 km, as well as torpedoes designed to engage submarines," Leonkov highlighted.
This kind of system has been installed on Russia's 636.3
Varshavyanka class submarines, which actively participated in launching strikes against land targets in Ukraine. The 3M-14 missile, in particular, was used, accurately
striking ground targets at long ranges, he revealed.
These are submarines of the Black Sea Fleet, which participated in operations where not only surface ships from the Black Sea Fleet were involved, but also submarines. According to the Russian MoD, all the targets were successfully hit, Leonkov concluded.
