Rosoboronexport Sees Strong Potential For Indo-Russian Cooperation on Military Transport Aircraft

As the Indian Air Force is looking to induct a variety of military transport aircraft to bolster its ability to move troops, arms, and ammunition swiftly to mountainous frontier regions, Russia's Rosoboronexport believes there is "strong potential" for cooperation in this area.
"In our opinion, cooperation with India on the new modifications of the Il-78MK-90A tanker aircraft and Il-76MD-90AE military transport aircraft has strong potential. International interest in these aircraft has significantly increased following the global premiere of the Il-76MD-90AE at Dubai Airshow 2023," Rosoboronexport told Sputnik India.
Previous modifications of these aircraft have been widely used by the Indian Air Force. One of the key advantages for India is their ability to operate from unprepared runways, as well as their high cargo capacity, the company added.
"Compared to earlier versions, the latest Il-78MK-90A tanker aircraft features an increased fuel capacity. Additionally, it can be converted into a transport, medical, or firefighting aircraft," the Russian arms exporter emphasised.
It is worth noting that the IAF has operated the Russian-built IL-76 and the Soviet-origin AN-32 for decades. At present, the
Boeing C-17 Globemaster and the
IL-76MD form the bedrock of India's strategic airlifters.
Moreover, a joint venture between India's
Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) and

at a facility in Vadodara.
Out of the total 56 aircraft that will be inducted into the IAF's fleet, 16 will come in 'fly-away' condition from Airbus's factory in Seville (Spain), while the remaining 40 will be produced in India.
These planes are set to replace the aging Avro-748 aircraft in the IAF's fleet.
