Russian Cosmonaut Oleg Artemyev Reflects on His Space Journeys, Cultural Bonds with India
Russian cosmonaut Oleg Artemyev spoke with Olga Lisogor, head of Sputnik News, about his extraordinary space expeditions, the significance of cross-cultural experiences, the importance of peace in space exploration, and his personal connection to the Indian flag, which he carried on three missions to space.
Russian cosmonaut Oleg Artemyev reflected on his journey in space and explained why he chose to carry the Indian flag into space.
"India was the 14th country to send a person into space, and the Soviet Union played a crucial role in that journey," he told Sputnik News at the NXT Conclave 2025.
Recalling his childhood, he described his visit to Baikonur as a schoolboy when Rakesh Sharma, India’s first astronaut, came to the Soviet Union.
“I visited Baikonur as a schoolboy, where rockets were launched and where the Indian astronaut flew from. I was there with other children waving flags when Rakesh Sharma arrived at Baikonur. So, I kept that flag from those times. I took it with me into space, and it flew with me three times. I hope it will remain here and take its rightful place in India," he said.
Artemyev also touched upon the
realities of space life, particularly the possibility of emergency situations. He highlighted the intensive training cosmonauts undergo to prepare for any crisis.
“All emergency situations are rehearsed on Earth. About 80% of the work we do on Earth is training for emergency scenarios like fires, depressurisations, and malfunctions. This rigorous preparation helps astronauts stay calm and focused during unexpected events," he said.
When asked about his experience of working with international crews, Artemyev shared that cosmonauts are assigned partners years before the mission, allowing them to bond and understand each other’s backgrounds.
“In space, we always live peacefully,” he stated, pointing out how cultural differences are reconciled and unity is achieved in pursuit of a common goal.
Artemyev also discussed BRICS’ vital role in promoting peaceful space exploration. He believes that BRICS nations, through their commitment to a weapons-free space, are instrumental in preventing an arms race in outer space.
He recalled his awe at the first sight of Earth from space, describing it as an experience that cannot be fully captured by photos or videos.
"You have to see it for yourself," he said, underscoring the profound impact it has on an astronaut's perception of Earth and life itself.
As Artemyev prepares for his next mission, his reflections on space, unity, and international collaboration serve as a poignant reminder of humanity’s shared journey in the cosmos.
