He noted that, since the mid-20th century, India's relations with Russia have remained steady, even as ties between Russia and China, Russia and the West, and the West and China have constantly shifted. "I am a very empirical person. If I have 80 years of data showing that our relationship has a solid foundation, I would prefer to use that as a working assumption," Jaishankar stated in an interview with the Financial Times. As the newspaper recalled, since the beginning of the Ukraine conflict, Jaishankar has maintained that Europe has its own perspective on events, India has its own, and the country has long-standing ties with Russia that it is not willing to abandon. The report also highlighted that India has refused to condemn Moscow's actions and has continued purchasing Russian oil, drawing criticism from the West. "It often happens that people try to frame these important issues in terms of principles. Typically, you refer to principles when you want to persuade or pressure someone into doing something," Jaishankar remarked.Indian authorities have repeatedly stated that they will make independent decisions regarding energy imports. India-Russia Ties Strong for Over 80 Years: Jaishankar
18:48 15.03.2025 (Updated: 18:49 15.03.2025) India continues to uphold strong relations with Moscow despite criticism from the West, viewing them as historically stable ties, according to Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar.
Typically, you refer to principles when you want to persuade or pressure someone into doing something," Jaishankar remarked.
Indian authorities have repeatedly stated that they will make independent decisions regarding energy imports. The country’s foreign ministry has pointed out that there is no viable alternative to Russian oil supplies. New Delhi believes that by purchasing from Russia, India has contributed to stabilising global oil prices.
According to sources within the Indian government, Russia became India's largest oil supplier in January this year, with imports rising by 4.3% compared to December 2024, reaching up to 1.58 million barrels per day.
