JAKARTA, March 31 (Sputnik) - Prime Minister of Myanmar Min Aung Hlaing declared on Monday a week of national mourning in connection with the consequences of a powerful earthquake that hit the country last week.
"Out of sympathy for the loss of life and damage, seven days have been declared national mourning days from March 31 to April 6. The national flag should be flown at half-mast during these days," the prime minister said in a statement.
A 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar on Friday, with tremors felt in Bangladesh, India, Laos, China and Thailand. The quake damaged underground oil pipelines, local authorities said on Saturday, adding that power lines had also been cut and oil tankers were arriving on the country's shores to ease fuel shortages. A number of countries, including Russia and Belarus, have been assisting Myanmar with relief efforts, including by sending rescue teams.
On Sunday, China's Xinhua news agency reported that the death toll from the earthquake had reached 1,700 people, with 3,400 injured and another 300 people missing.
